Rescue Dog Training
Rescue dog training is extremely important and beneficial,
as these wonderful dogs are used to help police to find missing person as well
as evidence. They are trained to track the human scent or areas where a person
has been using their incredible sense of smell.
The olfactory cells in a human is around 5 million, where a
dog has anywhere from 125 million up to 200 million. The difference is of
course, obvious, but also amazing. A dog is able to detect odors as little as
1 part per trillion.
A large portion of the dog’s brain is focused on his sense
of smell. For this reason, rescue dog training is so successful and respected
as his nose is the best judge.
In order for a dog to qualify for rescue dog training, he
must be able to complete a 45 minutes track. This is set by one person out in
a rural area. In this track there will be:
1. Crossing of 2 roads
2. 3 articles with related scent
3. He must be able to indicate turns
4. 1 dead end trail
5. Human tracks
6. 20 meters on areas with little scent, such as gravel.
7. A distraction to animal scent
In rescue dog training, he must also be able to retrieve
items that are found along the track that belong to the person that he is
tracking. The dog will be taught to obtain articles made of wood, cloth,
leather, and glass or metal.
The dog must be able to sit beside his handler, while an
item is thrown to fetch. Once the command is made, he must be able to pick up
the object, return it to his handler and sit back in position while holding the
object for 30 seconds. Once the command is given “out”, he will let go of the
object and go back to heel position.
Rescue dog training is ultimately training the dog to search
for a missing person by locating their scent. The handler needs to be aware of
the wind direction as the dog searches, as the scent can be carried away. This
is where this type of training will be important, working together in windy
conditions.
By putting your dog through rescue dog training, you will be
providing a great service and creating a dog of extreme value to everyone in
your community.
Dog Training Tip #1
Be Consistent. Use the same commands over and over as you are training, correcting, and praising your dog. Consistency will help your dog to understand and obey rather than be confused and disobedient. All family members should use the same commands when training your dog. Consistency breeds familiarity and desired behavior. |
Dog Training Tip #2
Praise Good Behavior. Make sure to praise your dog quickly and often when she has completed a command or responded in a positive manner. As you praise, look directly in your dog's eyes so that she will associate good behavior with the positive reinforcement she is receiving (voice and/or touch). |
Dog Training Tip #3
Keep Training Sessions Short. Approximately 15 minutes per session is optimal for learning a simple command and maintaining your dog's concentration. Make sure to end your training sessions on a positive note. One idea is to play with your dog immediately following a session. This will help your dog to associate time spent with you as fun and to look forward to another training session. |
