House Training A Dog
If you have had dogs in the past, or have a new puppy now,
then you may already know that the most difficult thing to do is house training
a dog. This is something that we dread, we feel unqualified, and fearful of
failure, which will lead to huge messes in our home.
Well, no worries, you won’t fail, and any dog can be house
trained. If you have obtained a dog that has been previously abused, you may
need to us some unconventional training methods, but it can be done. You will
just need to know how to get this message across to your dog in a way that he
or she can understand.
You may have been trying to train your dog and feel that
you have used every option available, and he is still not house broken. I am
going to tell you the easiest and the most successful method of house training
a dog.
This is done by taking your dog outside immediately after
you feed him, when he eliminates, you reward him. If you notice your dog going
inside the house, you are dealing with a behavioral problem. That is if there
is no physical problem such as a bladder infection.
The biggest problem you are facing is inconsistency. This
is because you are not finding the mess until later after the deed is done.
The first thing to do to solve this problem is to have the dog with you in the
same room, no matter where you go. Don’t let him wander off to other parts of
the house without you being with him. If you are going to be away, have him in
a crate, if he is trained for this.
If you find a mess, don’t panic. Soak it up then take it
outside to the area you want your dog to go. Let the dog sniff the paper towel
to associate the smell with that area. When he eliminates outside, reward
him. Your dog will then associate the smell the reward with the new area.
You may also teach your dog to let you know when he needs
to go outside. You can try hanging a bell on the doorknob to the door leading
out. First, show the bell to your puppy and let him nudge the bell with his
nose. When he does this, give him a treat. Soon, you will be letting him out
when he nudges it along with giving him a treat. Eventually he will be letting
you know he needs to go out and go potty outside without a treat. He will
associate the bell with going potty outside, this way you will always know when
he needs to go.
Dog Training Tip #1
Be Consistent. Use the same commands over and over as you are training, correcting, and praising your dog. Consistency will help your dog to understand and obey rather than be confused and disobedient. All family members should use the same commands when training your dog. Consistency breeds familiarity and desired behavior. |
Dog Training Tip #2
Praise Good Behavior. Make sure to praise your dog quickly and often when she has completed a command or responded in a positive manner. As you praise, look directly in your dog's eyes so that she will associate good behavior with the positive reinforcement she is receiving (voice and/or touch). |
Dog Training Tip #3
Keep Training Sessions Short. Approximately 15 minutes per session is optimal for learning a simple command and maintaining your dog's concentration. Make sure to end your training sessions on a positive note. One idea is to play with your dog immediately following a session. This will help your dog to associate time spent with you as fun and to look forward to another training session. |
