Dog Training Treats
Have you ever heard of the term “operant conditioning”?
This is a process of training your dog through consequences of his actions. Throughout
the years of dog training history, this has been shown to be the most effective
form of training. By rewarding your dog for good behavior, reinforces his good
behavior.
There is a lot of complicated mumbo jumbo that is used in
the studies done, but the simple fact is, that giving your dog a treat when he
does something good, he will repeat it. The technical terms, at least for me,
are the ABC method. This is where the Antecedent will produce the Behavior,
which therefore will yield the Consequences. See what I mean by the big words
making it sound more difficult and complicated that it really is.
Here are some good points remember when giving dog training
treats
A. The harder your
dog works, the bigger the treat. If your dog realizes when he works hard,
there will be a great reward at the end.
B. As your
dog gets better in his performance, the more treats you can give him. Don’t
make the reward too big at the beginning, you want to have something to work
toward.
C. If you are
teaching your dog tricks, then start with a small treat and as the tricks
graduate to bigger ones, change the treat to something of greater value to your
dog.
Dog training treats should be given consistently, so make
sure you have plenty on hand. And never, ever provide a treat because you feel
sorry for your dog because he is not able to perform the way you want him to.
So, whether you are training your dog using treats, or
operant conditioning, you will have a very happy dog that is ready to perform
whatever you are ready to teach him. Your dog will have a one track mind,
thinking, “If I do this, then I get the treat that is in his pocket”.
Make dog training treats a part of your dog training
program. Find treats that are healthy; there are even recipes of treats you
can make at home, found right here on the Internet. Happy training!
Dog Training Tip #1
Be Consistent. Use the same commands over and over as you are training, correcting, and praising your dog. Consistency will help your dog to understand and obey rather than be confused and disobedient. All family members should use the same commands when training your dog. Consistency breeds familiarity and desired behavior. |
Dog Training Tip #2
Praise Good Behavior. Make sure to praise your dog quickly and often when she has completed a command or responded in a positive manner. As you praise, look directly in your dog's eyes so that she will associate good behavior with the positive reinforcement she is receiving (voice and/or touch). |
Dog Training Tip #3
Keep Training Sessions Short. Approximately 15 minutes per session is optimal for learning a simple command and maintaining your dog's concentration. Make sure to end your training sessions on a positive note. One idea is to play with your dog immediately following a session. This will help your dog to associate time spent with you as fun and to look forward to another training session. |
