Dog Training Techniques
The very best dog training techniques are those that are used with verbal commands associated with hand signals. The most common commands are those used in the basic obedience training, which are “no”, “sit”, “down”, and “stay”. These are used by the trainer and are reinforced by his tone of voice, his body language along with the command. These all work together as the best dog training techniques.
Don’t tell a dog to sit over and over, then pushing him to sit after the 3rd or 4th time. This is teaching him that “sit” means to wait till I push you down.
You need to have a crisp and firm tone to your voice, loud enough for your dog to know you are not carrying on a typical conversation, it needs to be a command and sound like one. The command needs to be clear and concise, don’t drag it out, or question it in any way; this will only confuse your dog.
It is important to know that when you are teaching a dog a command, there needs to be some type of signal to go with it. For example, when you teach a dog to “stay” you will hold your hand out in front of his face, and then say “no” if he attempts to move. When using the training collar, the word “no” should be associated with a slight jerk of the collar.
Rewards need to always be a part of your dog training techniques; this will bring you the most success. A dog will do anything to get a treat. The greater the lesson, and behavior, the greater the treat should be. And food need not always be the reward, you can also use toys. They love being given a ball to play fetch, or something to chew on.
The most successful dog training techniques are accomplished when the trainer is happy and rewards with positive praise. A dog loves to see his owner happy, giving him lots of hugs and scratching. These dogs just want some positive attention and to know that their owner is happy. As silly as it may look or sound, it needs to be done in order to provide your dog the best training possible.
Dog Training Tip #1
Be Consistent. Use the same commands over and over as you are training, correcting, and praising your dog. Consistency will help your dog to understand and obey rather than be confused and disobedient. All family members should use the same commands when training your dog. Consistency breeds familiarity and desired behavior. |
Dog Training Tip #2
Praise Good Behavior. Make sure to praise your dog quickly and often when she has completed a command or responded in a positive manner. As you praise, look directly in your dog's eyes so that she will associate good behavior with the positive reinforcement she is receiving (voice and/or touch). |
Dog Training Tip #3
Keep Training Sessions Short. Approximately 15 minutes per session is optimal for learning a simple command and maintaining your dog's concentration. Make sure to end your training sessions on a positive note. One idea is to play with your dog immediately following a session. This will help your dog to associate time spent with you as fun and to look forward to another training session. |
