Dog Training Supplies
If you are equipped with the proper dog training supplies,
dog training will be simple and enjoyable for the both of you. You will need
some basic items to begin, the first being a 6 foot leather leash. This is
essential and must be good quality. The next item you will need is a slip or
choke collar, a line 15 feet long, some webbing or cotton rope, treats, crate,
baby gate, some chew toys and tools to keep your dog groomed.
Ok, now that you have that long list, let’s go over a few of
them to make sure you know the specifics.
Dog Leash
You will see dozens of leashes in the pet store to choose
from, made from all sorts of materials, different lengths and widths. You will
typically see them made from leather, chain or nylon.
The leash needs to be comfortable for you as well as your
dog, which makes the 6 foot length made of good leather, the best choice. Some
of the advantages of leather over the other materials are that it’s so
lightweight and it will last for year. The nylon leashes have a tendency to
cut or burn your skin, and the chain leashes are loud and obnoxious.
Dog Collars
Choke or pinch collars are great dog training supplies, but
are used for training purposes only. They are not to be left on your dog otherwise,
as they are dangerous and can even choke your dog. They need to be used
properly as well, or they can damage the dog’s throat.
As you are training your dog, the collar will tighten when
he is going against your command, and will loosen when he obeys. Never, ever
use these collars to punish or choke your dog in any way. Also, make sure you
have the right size for your dog, as one that is too large or too small can be
very irritating as well as dangerous.
If your dog does not respond well to a slip collar, then you
will want to try a halter. This fits over your dog’s head and muzzle, but
still allowing him to drink and pant. With a halter, you can easily control
which direction you want him to go.
15-Foot Line
This is used as a leash which allows your dog to be at a
farther distance, while yet giving you the control. This is typically used
when teaching a dog to heal.
Dog Treat Pouch
This will be the last of your dog training supplies, one
that you can buy or make yourself. You want to have something to keep your dog
treats in so that you won’t be fumbling around your pocket for one. This is
great for keeping the treats readily available for training purposes. Treats
need to be readily available on demand as your dog performs, by taking the time
to find one in your pocket, takes up that valuable moment that you need for
instant praise.
Dog Training Tip #1
Be Consistent. Use the same commands over and over as you are training, correcting, and praising your dog. Consistency will help your dog to understand and obey rather than be confused and disobedient. All family members should use the same commands when training your dog. Consistency breeds familiarity and desired behavior. |
Dog Training Tip #2
Praise Good Behavior. Make sure to praise your dog quickly and often when she has completed a command or responded in a positive manner. As you praise, look directly in your dog's eyes so that she will associate good behavior with the positive reinforcement she is receiving (voice and/or touch). |
Dog Training Tip #3
Keep Training Sessions Short. Approximately 15 minutes per session is optimal for learning a simple command and maintaining your dog's concentration. Make sure to end your training sessions on a positive note. One idea is to play with your dog immediately following a session. This will help your dog to associate time spent with you as fun and to look forward to another training session. |
