Dog Training Classes

There are a number of dog training classes available, with each trainer using a different method. You will find classes that are strict, adhering to details when it comes to teaching the commands. They have their own way of doing things and will not stray from their beliefs. They will be firm in the way that you handle your dog while you are in class.

You will find other dog training classes that are very relaxed and offer a more open class for dogs and their owners. These classes give you more of the general basics of dog training and there are not titles that go along with the training. You can find classes such as these at pet stores or vet clinics. Because these classes are so readily available and popular, the trainer per dog ratio is broad.

Some dog training classes will be geared toward a positive teaching approach, where there are others that believe in the stricter, no nonsense way of training. You will not find treats and such in these types of classes. They tend to use more of an authoritative approach, where the trainer is the master, the one in control, and the dog obeys. They use things such as shock collars or other means of dominating the dog.

There are dog training classes that are more focused on puppies, kind of like puppy kindergarten. These classes are smaller and have a limit on the age of the puppy. They are great because they are geared toward the shorter attention span, and give them a time for play.

Try not to sign up for a dog training class that has too many students and not enough instructors. This will prevent each dog from getting the necessary attention they need. There may some teacher that does a lot of talking and not a lot of training. So you want to watch for this as well.

Good dog training classes will have instructors that can relate to the dog owners as well as the dogs. You need to have a good rapport with the instructor as well. You will be working with the instructor of a period of time, and you will want to feel comfortable in asking questions, reviewing techniques as well as anything else related to your dog training classes.

Dog Training Tip #1

Be Consistent. Use the same commands over and over as you are training, correcting, and praising your dog. Consistency will help your dog to understand and obey rather than be confused and disobedient. All family members should use the same commands when training your dog. Consistency breeds familiarity and desired behavior.

Dog Training Tip #2

Praise Good Behavior. Make sure to praise your dog quickly and often when she has completed a command or responded in a positive manner. As you praise, look directly in your dog's eyes so that she will associate good behavior with the positive reinforcement she is receiving (voice and/or touch).

Dog Training Tip #3

Keep Training Sessions Short. Approximately 15 minutes per session is optimal for learning a simple command and maintaining your dog's concentration. Make sure to end your training sessions on a positive note. One idea is to play with your dog immediately following a session. This will help your dog to associate time spent with you as fun and to look forward to another training session.
