Dog Training Aids
If you have been using the
traditional training methods of dog training, and they don’t seem to be working
as well as you had hoped, you may want to think about using one of the dog
training aids that many professional trainers use. This is an electric dog
training collar.
These collars first came
into use about 20 or so years ago. They didn’t have any shock level
adjustments on them which made them too powerful for the smaller dogs. They
were often used as dog training aids for hunting dogs.
Today they are much safer
and a great addition to the dog training aids, if they are used properly. They
can be used very effectively on most dogs, large or small. There are a couple
of collar types, the beeper collar and the bark collar.
A beeper collar is one
that uses a remote transmitter. They can be a bit pricey and more
sophisticated than a bark collar, which I will get into next. You have a hand
held radio which transmits a signal over the receiver to the collar. This
gives you a huge advantage to control your dogs barking.
Not only will you be able
to control the barking, you will also be able to control bad behavior such as
jumping on others, digging, or anything else that you see to be unacceptable
behavior in your dog.
The disadvantage of the
beeper collar is that you need to have the control in your hands at all times
to regulate your dog’s behavior and to operate the collar.
Bark collars are the more
popular of the two dog training aids. This works just the way the name
implies. When your dog barks, there will be an electrical shock sent to his
neck from the collar. This should stop the barking, and will work
automatically, whether you are around or not. This will give you the peace
that your dog is not barking all day while you are at work, disturbing the
neighbors.
This is one of the dog
training aids that are used all the time, 24 hours a day. These are not
typically very expensive, not like the beep collars. There is a separate
battery charger, but other than that, everything is right there on the collar.
Dog Training Tip #1
Be Consistent. Use the same commands over and over as you are training, correcting, and praising your dog. Consistency will help your dog to understand and obey rather than be confused and disobedient. All family members should use the same commands when training your dog. Consistency breeds familiarity and desired behavior. |
Dog Training Tip #2
Praise Good Behavior. Make sure to praise your dog quickly and often when she has completed a command or responded in a positive manner. As you praise, look directly in your dog's eyes so that she will associate good behavior with the positive reinforcement she is receiving (voice and/or touch). |
Dog Training Tip #3
Keep Training Sessions Short. Approximately 15 minutes per session is optimal for learning a simple command and maintaining your dog's concentration. Make sure to end your training sessions on a positive note. One idea is to play with your dog immediately following a session. This will help your dog to associate time spent with you as fun and to look forward to another training session. |
