Dog Potty Training
The first thing you need to face as a new dog owner is dog potty training. This is just a fact of doggy life, they need to go potty, and you need to teach them where to do it. At first it can be a bit challenging, but I have a few ideas here to help you get started, and make your job a bit easier.
The first thing you want to do is make sure your dog is getting the best food, no sugar and lots of fiber. Don’t feed him treats in between meals. If you are feeding your dog healthy food, it will show in his coat and teeth.
After you find a food that you approve of, stick with it as well as a good feeding routine. This will help them in their potty schedule.
As soon as your dog wakes up in the morning, take him outside to go potty. Then you will want to feed him right after. After you dog has eaten, wait about 30 minutes then take him out to potty again. Do this after each mealtime.
Just like a child, if your dog has too much to drink, he will need to go out more, and if he is not able to, he will probably have an accident. It is very important to keep your dog on a routine, this will make dog potty training much easier and successful.
You will soon learn the schedule of your dog, but typically, he will need to have a bowel movement about 20 to 30 minutes after he eats. Get yourself and your dog into this routine and he will be happy to do his duty outside on schedule.
If you have a particular area that you want your dog to use, then you will want to take him out on a leash as you are dog potty training. Take him there each time on his leash, and praise him up and down. This will train him to go to the same spot each time.
Another thing to do is use the same command each time you take your dog out. For example, use the phrase “go potty”, so he will learn to relate the command to the action. If they don’t go, then wait 15 minutes and go outside again. Make sure you praise them when they do their duty.
Now, see dog potty training is not that hard, you just need to be consistent and have a good schedule, one which you and your dog can live with.
Dog Training Tip #1
Be Consistent. Use the same commands over and over as you are training, correcting, and praising your dog. Consistency will help your dog to understand and obey rather than be confused and disobedient. All family members should use the same commands when training your dog. Consistency breeds familiarity and desired behavior. |
Dog Training Tip #2
Praise Good Behavior. Make sure to praise your dog quickly and often when she has completed a command or responded in a positive manner. As you praise, look directly in your dog's eyes so that she will associate good behavior with the positive reinforcement she is receiving (voice and/or touch). |
Dog Training Tip #3
Keep Training Sessions Short. Approximately 15 minutes per session is optimal for learning a simple command and maintaining your dog's concentration. Make sure to end your training sessions on a positive note. One idea is to play with your dog immediately following a session. This will help your dog to associate time spent with you as fun and to look forward to another training session. |
