Attack Dog Training

If you are ever around an attack dog training event, you may want to stay clear of these animals, at least don't make any wrong moves. Attack dogs are trained to hurt and bite, and I don't think you would like to experience either.

Attack dog training is typically used for police work, but there have been other uses in history.  Over a hundred years ago, attack dogs were used to to break the enemy lines of armies, and they were also used to kill fugitive slaves escaping over the enemy lines.

Attack dog training is used to train a dog to bite and to stop biting upon command.  This is what makes an attack dog so helpful in the police force, while also not being a dangerous animal to work with.

But, unfortunately, there are some dogs that have been trained to attack, but they are not taught to stop attacking on command.  These dogs may the type to even bite their owner or trainer.  These type of dogs are not considered to be attack dogs, just dogs that are mean and vicious.

Attack dog training teaches a dog to be well behaved around other people, with the utmost obedience skills.  These dogs are not trained to attack anyone, unless they are commanded to, or their owner is threatened.

Before a dog is admitted into attack dog training, he must be in excellent health both physically and  psychologically.  There will be a very long and very demanding obedience training before the attack dog training even begins.

Is attack dog training the same as guard dog training? Attack dogs and guard dogs are not the same.  Even though an attack dog can be a guard dog, a guard dog may not be a good attack dog.

A guard dog's duty is to inform his master when a stranger comes around.  They are not trained to attack, which is why there are so many smaller dogs that make great guard dogs, but would not be so great as an attack dog.

Does attack dog training make the dog dangerous?

If an attack dog has not been trained properly, then he can be dangerous.  He is again, not an attack dog, he will just become a vicious dog that will attack anyone, including his owner.

If a dog is properly trained through attack dog training, then he is not dangerous.  The handler will be trained in how to handle his dog, and be able to predict his behavior and control it.

Dog Training Tip #1

Be Consistent. Use the same commands over and over as you are training, correcting, and praising your dog. Consistency will help your dog to understand and obey rather than be confused and disobedient. All family members should use the same commands when training your dog. Consistency breeds familiarity and desired behavior.

Dog Training Tip #2

Praise Good Behavior. Make sure to praise your dog quickly and often when she has completed a command or responded in a positive manner. As you praise, look directly in your dog's eyes so that she will associate good behavior with the positive reinforcement she is receiving (voice and/or touch).

Dog Training Tip #3

Keep Training Sessions Short. Approximately 15 minutes per session is optimal for learning a simple command and maintaining your dog's concentration. Make sure to end your training sessions on a positive note. One idea is to play with your dog immediately following a session. This will help your dog to associate time spent with you as fun and to look forward to another training session.
